  • Our lab focuses on applied and clinical issues related to the psychology of music, as well as the intersection of the psychology of music with positive psychology and the psychology of religion and spirituality. Recent research projects include:

    1) Why do people listen to sad music, and what effects does this have, especially in people with depression?

    2) Drug Use, spirituality, and well-being in participants in the Electronic Dance Music Scene

    3) Personality styles of performing musicians

    4) Various topics in positive psychology

    Social Motives for Listening to Sad Music - An interview and questionnaire study addressing several issues, including whether people listening to sad music engage in upward or downward social compression.

    Motives for Listening to Sad Music - Designing a questionnaire to measure individuals’ reasons for listening to sad music.

    Predictors of Preference for Sad Music - A study attempting to replicate studies from other countries identifying predictors of liking and listening to sad music.

    Personality Styles of Jazz Musicians - A continuation of an earlier project examining whether musicians playing specific instruments are more likely to exhibit specific personality traits.

    History of the Al Cobine Orchestra - The Al Cobine big band began in Bloomington, Indiana in 1955 and was a training ground for several generations of jazz musicians. This is a local history project documenting and preserving the history of the band and its legacy.
